VYC JUNIOR is open to singers in grades 7 to 10. Members of VYC JUNIOR build musicianship and long lasting friendships in a joyful and creative environment.
For singers who
“VYC is like a different world. Everyone is kind and nobody judges you for your looks or passions. I've made so many friends here. I could never leave.”
VYC JUNIOR performs three times a year with all of the VYC choirs, as well as community and outreach performances in the lower mainland. The choir also participates in an optional overnight BC tour each season, and enjoys connecting and collaborating with other choirs across the province. VYC Junior members are proud to act as mentors in our VYC Tiny program.
VYC JUNIOR is conducted by Carrie Tennant, and accompanied by Caitlin Hayes. At each VYC JUNIOR rehearsal, there are mentor singers from our senior choir who assist with sectionals and vocal modeling, and lead small group rehearsals.
VYC JUNIOR this season is based on a hybrid model of both online “special guest” workshops and in-person, small-group, outdoor rehearsals. Our guest guest artists range from local superstars Dawn Pemberton and Ashleigh Ball, to artists from across the country and around the world. VYC JR singers will work with people from all over the world, with the goal to expand our own world, and to improve our craft. At our in-person rehearsals, VYC JR will work towards a recording session for a video concert in December and May.
Each month, from January to May, VYC JUNIOR will have one online workshop with a special guest, and one small-group, in-person, 50 minute outdoor rehearsal. There are also opportunities for special online projects for singers who are interested.
VYC Junior does not require previous experience, however, we strive to have a balanced choir (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass). For this reason, all interested singers are asked to participate in a placement interview.
As a result of COVID 19, VYC is having a very different season! Our program this season is based on a hybrid model of both online “special guest” workshops and in-person, small-group, outdoor rehearsals. Our guest guest artists range from local superstars Dawn Pemberton and Ashleigh Ball, to international artists Rajaton, the University of Pretoria Youth Choir, and Jacob Collier. VYC singers will work with people from all over the world, with the goal to expand our own world, and to improve our craft.
Rehearsals & Schedule
VYC JUNIOR “in-person” sessions will take place on Monday evenings at a covered outdoor space at Carnarvon Elementary
It is important to note that there is no such thing as zero risk – even before COVID. Even though we are outdoors, HOW we run our in-person rehearsals is essential to our singers’ safety. We have strict policies and protocols around social distancing, hand sanitizing, entry and exits etc, as well as health checks at the door. All families are asked to read and sign our COVID 19 policy document, and agree to following all the protocol outlined in order to participate in the choir.
