VYC 2021 Bootcamps

“Get Literate with Luke!”

Literacy Level 1
An intensive and interactive bootcamp for older youth covering basic music literacy skills including solfege, rhythm syllables in different metres, treble and bass clefs, interval identification and sight singing in major and minor keys. This course is ideal for those who plan to audition for choirs that require strong music literacy, or for those who simply want to push their skills to the next level.

“Get Literate with Luke!”

Literacy Level 2
An intensive and interactive bootcamp for older youth covering more advanced music literacy skills including chromatic solfege, syncopated rhythms and compound metre, chord identification and sight singing in major and minor keys. This course is ideal for singers who already have music reading experience, or have taken Luke’s literacy level 1 class in the fall or in February. Registration for this class will open after the level one course in February.

Introduction to Conducting and Choir Leadership

Do you love choir and want to explore a new aspect of choral artistry and take on leadership roles? This intensive and interactive bootcamp covers the basics of physical conducting technique, strategies for teaching singing, and rehearsal leadership. This course is ideal for current or aspiring section leaders and choir mentors, or those considering a path as a music teacher or choir conductor. The online sessions will build your skills and understanding, and then the in-person conducting lab will give you the chance to try conducting a live and responsive choir of your peers. Basic music reading skills are required for this course.

Music LIT-eracy Bootcamp

Level 1
Join Jocelyn for an intensive and interactive bootcamp for younger youth covering a basic introduction to music literacy skills. This online bootcamp will cover basic notation, solfege, and rhythms. This course is ideal for those who are brand-new to reading music.

Melodie’s Music Literacy Bootcamp

Level 2
Join Melodie for an intensive and interactive bootcamp curated for younger youth who seek to enhance their music literacy and sight singing ability. This online bootcamp will start with a brief review of music literacy fundamentals, then dive into more advanced concepts like major and minor key signatures, chromatic solfege, and minor scales. If you have some experience with music reading and want to develop your music literacy and sight singing skills, this bootcamp is for you!

Melodie’s Music Literacy Bootcamp

Level 3
Are you ready to challenge yourself? Take this intensive and interactive bootcamp geared toward more advanced younger youth who are looking to gain greater sight reading fluency. This online bootcamp will focus on interval identification, chords and inversions, complex rhythms, musical terms, and harmonic functions. If you have a solid grasp of intermediate music literacy fundamentals and sight singing, consider taking this bootcamp to advance your musical understanding and challenge your sight singing skills.

Spring Break Online Camps

Intro to Garageband

In this introductory level course, students will learn to use the basics of Garageband – including recording and importing audio, programming and inputting MIDI – so they can start creating their own music!

NOTE: Participants must have an apple laptop or desktop to operate Garageband.

Musical Water Lab

This is a 3-day Spring Break zoom camp for young singers interested in exploring Music and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). From building a xylophone to composing on Chrome Music Lab, we will use our creativity to turn our kitchens into a fantastic musical lab! Come join Jocelyn for this physically distanced, but socially fun and hands-on camp!

NOTE: A list of required materials will be sent out prior to the start of the camp.

The Noisy Artist

In this Spring Break camp, singers will dive into the world of synesthesia, abstract art, and music composition with the storybook “The Noisy Paint Box”, written by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Mary Grandpre. Along with an art educator, Ideet, and Jocelyn, singers will learn about expressing art and music through different mediums and senses! Put on your creative hat, and get ready to become a noisy artist!
