Our Organization

The Vancouver Youth Choir is Vancouver’s newest choral organization for children and youth. Founded in 2013 by Carrie Tennant, the choirs provide a space for beginning to advanced young singers to develop their artistry in a creative and supportive community. Over the past three years, VYC has grown rapidly. Beginning our first season with 30 singers, the organization has now expanded to include over 140 singers in three separate choirs: the Vancouver Youth Choir, VYC Junior, and VYC Kids. In all our levels, we strive for artistry and excellence. We believe in the artistic potential of young people - regardless of their age, ability or experience. Just as important to us, however, is to create a safe and supportive place for this artistry to develop. In addition to building skill and fostering talent, it is part of the Vancouver Youth Choir’s mandate to develop creative, caring citizens who value contributing to and investing in their communities.

The Vancouver Youth Choir is our flagship ensemble. Open to singers aged 15-24, this group of advanced young musicians are dedicated, passionate, and joyful about their music-making. Members represent over eight municipalities in the lower mainland, including 10 different high schools and five different post-secondary institutions. From engineering students to high-school volleyball players, and from registered doulas to future chefs, the singers in the Vancouver Youth Choir are united by their love of the choral art form and their desire to contribute to their communities.

Now entering their fourth season, VYC is quickly establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with in the Canadian choral community. Known for their heartfelt and authentic performances, the choir was awarded second place in the youth choir category of the 2014 National Competition for Amateur Choirs, and this past summer, represented Canada at the International Choral Festival in Missoula, Montana. VYC singers love to share and collaborate with other choirs and conductors, and last season shared the stage with the University of Pretoria Youth Choir from South Africa, and Henry Leck and the Indianapolis Youth Chorale. In 2015, 2016, and 2017 VYC has been invited to perform as the featured choir at the Whistler and Sun Peaks Cantando Festivals, performing for thousands of high school singers and conductors. This past summer, the “Vancouver Youth Choir Choral Series” was launched with Cypress Publishing. This series will feature brand new music by Canadian composers and arrangers for SATB youth choirs. VYC is also proud to be entering their third season as an associate choir with the Vancouver Chamber Choir. This season, VYC looks forward to three season concerts, two collaborations with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and three performances at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival.
