The Vancouver Youth Choir is our flagship ensemble. Open to singers aged 15-24, this auditioned group of advanced young musicians is dedicated, passionate, and joyful about music-making. Members represent over eight municipalities in the lower mainland, including six different high schools and five different post-secondary institutions. From engineering students to high school volleyball players, and from registered doulas to future opera singers, the singers of Vancouver Youth Choir are united by their love of the choral art form and their desire to contribute to their communities.
Now in their seventh season, VYC has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the Canadian choral community. VYC is now recognized as one of Canada's finest youth choirs, having recently won first prize in its category in the 2017 National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. The choir is fast gaining visibility internationally as well; VYC represented Canada at the 2016 International Choral Festival in Missoula (Montana), the Festival International Choral en Provence in July 2018, and the 2019 American Choral Director's Association National Conference in Kansas City, MO. VYC has been featured on CBC radio, at the Push International Performing Arts Festival, and is proud to be in its sixth season as an Associate Choir of the Vancouver Chamber Choir.

FALL/WINTER 2020 PLANS
Each month, from September to December, VYC SR will have TWO online workshops (as part of the Bridge Collective, outlined below) and TWO small-group, in-person, outdoor rehearsals.
The Bridge Choral Collective represents a bold cross-Canada initiative to generate thrilling new music, rooted in justice, in a time of global contemplation. It cements the bonds among Canada's most innovative youth and young adult choirs, and brings them together to explore and create in partnership with guest artists from around the world.
Corazon Youth Choir (Nelson) / Grand Philharmonic Youth Choir (Kitchener)
Kokopelli Youth choir (Edmonton) / Toronto Youth Choir (Toronto)
Prairie Voices (Winnipeg) / Vancouver Youth Choir (Vancouver)
As a member of the Bridge Choral Collective, VYC SR will participate in online workshops with the following artists:
Conductor Llente Pitout and members of the University of Pretoria Youth Choir (South Africa)
Moira Smiley (USA)
Elise Bradley (New Zealand and Canada)
Optional post-secondary/music industry career track seminar session!
Grammy winning recording artist Jacob Collier (UK)
In addition to this, the senior choir will meet TWICE a month for 50 minute, small group, in-person, outdoor rehearsals. We have rented the top 2 floors of the Thunderbird parkade tower at UBC, which is covered, has completely open walls, and a great acoustic. Seniors will rehearse towards an outdoor event in October, and a live-streamed or pre-recorded concert in December. You can find the schedule for seniors HERE. These times could still change slightly. Please know that this is a year where we will need to be extraordinarily flexible on all fronts as we react to changes in the virus.
We will announce the launch of our “Spring season” in December, based on the research available at that time.
Cost for this program (September-December) will be $325 per singer.
As always, we have bursaries available for singers with financial need. Please email Aine at [email protected] for more information.
SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR IN-PERSON REHEARSALS:
It is important to note that there is no such thing as zero risk - even before COVID. Even though we are outdoors, HOW we run our in-person rehearsals is going to be essential to our singers’ safety. We will have strict policies and protocols around social distancing, hand sanitizing, entry and exits etc, as well as health checks at the door. All families will be asked to read and sign our COVID 19 policy document, and agree to following all the protocol outlined in order to participate in the choir.
